Despite its ant-like appearance, this creature most likely descends from a a long-extinct amphibian ancestor. Phosphorescent patterns on the skin indicate nocturnal habits.
In Latin, "formica" means "ant", and the last part of the name is probably from "acidus": sharp, sour. They really look like ants. Incidentally "formic acid" is also the acid know as ant acid... see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formic_acid.
